AAUW Maui Branch was founded in 1962 with a group of woman college graduates who sought to promote equality and education for girls and women. Building upon this legacy, today’s AAUW Maui Branch seeks to evolve with the times to focus on the purpose of AAUW through mission focused programming coordinated with AAUW Hawaii and its branches. Facing a nationwide decline in AAUW membership, and an aging population and membership, our Maui Branch has welcomed a record number of young diverse working women members. We look forward to building community and a next generation of AAUW leaders, supporters, and testifiers engaging with the mission and purpose of AAUW.Â
We feel it is our obligation as Maui was the home of Patsy Mink to be champions for Title IX, for equality for women and girls, and equal pay for working women. AAUW is the primary community organization lobbying for equal pay in Hawaii, and we support AAUW Hawaii’s legislative priorities regarding childcare and paid family leave to support Hawaii’s working women and working mothers.
“It is easy enough to vote right and be consistently with the majority. But it is more often more important to be ahead of the majority and this means being willing to cut the first furrow in the ground and stand alone for a while if necessary.”
Â
“We have to build things that we want to see accomplished, in life and in our country, based on our own personal experiences… to make sure that others … do not have to suffer the same discrimination.”
- Â Â Â Patsy Matsu Takemoto Mink, Congresswoman from Hawaii, the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress, and Maui High School Valedictorian 1944.
